Fragokastello is a coastal village located on the southern coast of Crete, 12 km east of Chora Sfakion. The main attraction is the castle of the same name, which was built by the Venetians in 1374, who were ruling over the island of Crete at the time, with the aim of protecting it from pirates. The Venetian name of the castle was Agios Nikitas. However, the name Frangokastello prevailed, which was given to it by the local population and means "the castle of the Franks", as the local population used to call all foreign Catholics, "Franks". The name was gradually adopted by the Venetians. The beach is easily accessible by car, and it is organized with sunbeds. It is sandy and the sea is quite shallow. In the area, we find several taverns and cafes.
